Saves Time, Money and Physical Strain – Howard Meltzer Mechanizes Orchard Hedging

At Yellingbo Olive Grove, quality has always come first.

Established more than 30 years ago by Howard Meltzer, the 120-acre property produces premium extra virgin olive oil under the Yellingbo Gold brand. With around 30 acres under trees and approximately 2,000 olive trees planted over a 10-year period, the grove is a boutique operation focused on delivering high-quality results.

But as the trees matured, so did the challenges.

The Challenge of Manual Pruning

For many years, pruning at Yellingbo Olive Grove was done the traditional way, by hand using saws, chainsaws and cherry pickers. While manageable on a small scale, the physical demands increased dramatically as the grove expanded and trees reached full maturity.

Managing 2,000 mature olive trees made pruning:

  • Physically demanding

  • Time consuming

  • Highly labour intensive

Pruning season was consistently one of the toughest times of the year, and it became clear that a more efficient and sustainable approach was needed.

Finding the Right Solutionorchard hedging

The turning point came with the introduction of a 1602 (1.6m) Quadsaw system, a mechanised pruning attachment designed specifically for commercial orchard operations.

A key requirement was cutting capacity. The operation needed a machine capable of cutting at least 75mm branches to properly manage mature trees. The quad saw not only met that requirement but exceeded it, with larger models cutting up to 210mm in diameter)

It delivers:

  • Clean, consistent cuts up to 75mm with ease

  • The ability to cut up to 120mm when operated at reduced speed

  • A four-blade configuration capable of handling heavy material

For Yellingbo Olive Grove, this meant pruning could be completed thoroughly rather than partially, ensuring long-term tree health and productivity.

A More Efficient Operation

With the 1602 Quadsaw and 2802 Multi-Carrier integrated into their system,  pruning moved from a drawn-out manual process to a streamlined operation.

What once required significant time and physical effort can now be completed in approximately 10 days, with heavier structural pruning carried out every four years. The shift to mechanisation has delivered clear operational benefits:

  • Reduced reliance on manual labour

  • Lower overall pruning costs

  • Faster turnaround during peak periods

Built for Practical Orchardists

Beyond performance, reliability has been a major advantage. The quad saw is built with durability in mind and can be maintained in-house without the constant need for specialist servicing. For orchard operators who value dependable equipment that performs season after season, this makes a real difference.

A Smarter Way to Prune

Mechanisation is not just about speed. It is about creating a viable long-term operation.

By transitioning from hand pruning to a quad saw system, Yellingbo Olive Grove has reduced physical strain, improved efficiency and strengthened the sustainability of the business. The result is a more productive orchard and a more practical way to manage it.

As Howard reflects, adopting the quad saw changed the game entirely and is something he wishes he had done earlier.
